US-2 American Institutions Survey
Explanation of 'Required Option' Terminology
FAST Area Studies Program
Department of Translation Studies, University of Tampere

In the English Translation B.A. curriculum, students must take one "institutions" course: American, British (or, through 2010-2012, Canadian or Irish) to complete their Basic Studies. Most students take both (or all four, prior to 2011-2012), but only one is required, due to the credit limit for Basic Studies in the degree requirements. The 'other' course(s) will later count toward Intermediate Studies requirements.

In the "intermediate" level, English Translation major students are also required to take the Finnish Institutions Research Paper. In the B.A. curriculum, this is optional for English Translation minor students.

Note, however, that the institutions courses which are not required by English Translation would count toward FAST Area Studies minor requirements (if students take the FAST Program as their minor subject). Please see the FAST Program Background and Requirements for details.
