(This is a supplementary file to 124 Most Popular Sports in the United States) A FAST-US-7 United States Popular Culture Reference File Department of Translation Studies, University of Tampere The first table of data was abstracted from a Superstudy of sports participation conducted by American Sports Data, Inc., which monitored 102 sports and fitness activities. This 1998 study included 42 more sports/activities than previous studies. The top three activities (recreational swimming, walking and bicycling) are among the 42 new measurements. The most popular sports in American colleges and universities contrast with those of the general population. In 1998-99, 983 NCAA [National Collegiate Athletic Association] schools had men's basketball programs, making it by far the most popular sport.
