The first table of data was abstracted from a Superstudy of sports participation conducted by American Sports Data, Inc., which monitored 102 sports and fitness activities. This 1998 study included 42 more sports/activities than previous studies. The top three activities (recreational swimming, walking and bicycling) are among the 42 new measurements. (See also the 2007 top sports.)

The most popular sports in American colleges and universities contrast with those of the general population. In 1998-99, 983 NCAA [National Collegiate Athletic Association] schools had men's basketball programs, making it by far the most popular sport. Below are the top five most-offered college men's and women's sports. Note that football is in eighth place for men, sponsored by 607 NCAA institutions.
